INTERNET SAFETY WARNING
Doing everything on this page may not prevent an abuser from discovering
your email and internet activity.
The safest way for you to view information on the internet is simply to go to a safer computer.
Try a local library, a friend's house or your workplace.
Change your password/s often, do not pick familiar words or numbers such as birthdates for your password.
Pick a combination of letters and numbers for your password. Do not write them down someplace that your
abuser could find them.
YOUR INTERNET ACTIVITIES CAN BE TRACED
Your Email - An abuser can gain access to your email account, and read your incoming and outgoing mail.
Email is not secure and should not be used to communicate about the violence or abuse happening to you except
as a last resort. If used, you should access your email through your internet service provider online and not
through programs such as Outlook, Eudora or other program on your computer. Always make sure you choose a
password that is not easy to guess, and always close out or log off of your email session and close your browser
to prevent someone from re-opening your session and viewing your mail.
Threatening or harassing email messages may be printed and saved as evidence. Such messages may constitute a
federal offense and should be reported to your local United States Attorney's Office.
The History - The history function of your internet browser automatically saves web pages and pictures
from the web sites you have visited. These files can be easily read if an abuser knows how to do it, showing
what web sites you've gone to and what information you have viewed.
HOW TO CLEAR OUT THE FILES
YOU MAY WANT TO PRINT THIS PAGE FOR REFERENCE
Be aware that doing the following may not completely hide your internet tracks. It will help, but with increasingly
sophisticated spying and tracking software, a determined abuser may easily be able to retrieve information
before you have even cleared out the history. Your SAFEST bet is using a computer that your abuser doesn't
know about or use.
If Your Internet Browser is -

remembered, but these remaining cookies do show website pages you have
visited. Therefore, use your own judgment as to whether or not to take
this next step). Click on "View Files." Manually highlight
all the files (cookies) shown, then hit Delete. Close that window, then
on General page under History section, click on "Clear History."

If you are using Internet Explorer, this box can be found by clicking on "Tools" at the top of the screen,
then "Internet Options," and then the "Content" tab. Near the lower right side, click the "AutoComplete"
